The Photo Kaizen Story

Welcome to Photo Kaizen, a unique platform designed to provide valuable feedback on your photography, regardless of your skill level or experience. I'm Matt Palmer, the creator of this site, and I'd like to share why I believe it can make a difference in your photographic journey.

Photography isn't just my profession; it's my life. As a photographer, gallery owner, and photography judge, I've had the honor of being named Australian Professional Photographer of the Year. But my path to success wasn't always clear or easy. When I first started, I had no profile, no recognition. I learned what I could from magazines, books, online resources like Strobist, and the occasional video tutorial. I practiced for hours every day and worked directly with clients who appreciated my work. In my early 20s I even converted my home's loungeroom into a studio!

This approach slowly improved my skills and knowledge over a decade, but it didn't quickly enhance the most crucial aspect - my vision, my eye, and how I thought about photography and its possibilities. It wasn't until more than ten years into my photography career that I took the leap to put myself and my work out there, to be vulnerable to the feedback of industry icons and experts. I entered numerous competitions and print critiques, listening intently to all the feedback - both praise and criticism which stung deeply!

Cutting to present day, with over 200 national and international awards and titles, I have a network of peers who are among the best photographers in the world. I can always get feedback on my work when I need it. It's this opportunity for growth and improvement that I want to share with others through Photo Kaizen.

"Kaizen" is the Japanese concept of continual improvement through small steps. This philosophy is at the heart of our approach. I've assembled a team of genre experts, all known for providing constructive feedback, to help you take those small but significant steps in your photographic journey.

At Photo Kaizen, we offer the opportunity to learn quickly, even if you're not sure what questions to ask. We provide personal attention and feedback in a safe, private environment through our website. Our goal is to help you develop the way you see photography with each critique.

I understand that submitting your photography for feedback can be a big step. That's why we offer a satisfaction guarantee, making it easier for you to take that first step with us. If you're curious about my credentials, you can find more information below.
